While women come to mind when breast implant surgery is first mentioned, and while women may account for more than 90% of the aesthetic and cosmetic surgery procedures performed every year in the US, the number of men who are having cosmetic surgery is increasing rapidly, and the popularity of pectoral implants in men are increasing as well.

Not Exactly The Same As With Women

Of course men and women are different physically and physiologically so the pectoral implant procedure becoming popular with men isn’t the same as breast augmentation surgery undergone by women.  But, there are similarities in that both are building up the chest area   The reason for some to get pectoral implants stems from inability to build up the chest muscles through regular exercise and weight training to a desired size,  Not all, however, seek the procedure for this reason.  A disease called Poland’s syndrome, which is a group of congenital abnormalities, unilateral in nature, of the chest wall  often lead to recommendations of pectoral implants.  While implants will not improve the definition of muscles, more bulk added will give the impression of larger muscles.

How Is The Procedure Performed?

When performing the procedure an incision is made inside of the armpit where  scarring  will be hidden… The surgeon will, after examination,  place the previously chosen size and shaped implants under the pectoralis muscle with results being an appearance of a more defined chest.  Pectoral implants feel more firm than breast implants used on women.

How Much Healing Time Is Needed?

Healing time  for pectoral implants is about one week before normal activity can be resumed and full activity will be restricted depending on individual factors and the progression of the healing process.  There is a recovery period which requires minimal activity for one week and the wearing of a compression garment  for four weeks, night and day.  Most patients though can resume more rigorous activity within about six weeks.  One difference between the pectoral implants of men and women is that those of men are not filled.  Also the risk of side effects is much lower than with women’s breast implants.

Implants comes in several sizes. Before the surgical procedures is performed  the chest wall is measured to ensure choosing the right sized implant. After pec implant surgery the patient can  build the  pectoral muscles for an even more noticeable result.
