Plastic surgery is often related most closely with women, but many men are opting to go under the knife these days too. Because of the physical differences between men and women, and the fact that the majority of procedures are still done on women, men have a harder time finding the right information for their desired surgeries.
Plastic Surgeries for Men:
Many surgeries are the same for men and women, with some slight modifications to control for the different body types.
Neck lifts: More and more men choose to get neck lifts to remove the excess skin that can exist just under the chin. For men with facial hair, beards and sideburns will be taken into consideration when making the incisions. The neck muscles on a man are thicker than on a woman, which can change the nature of the surgery. This may make it easier for doctors to do a direct incision, rather than going through the muscle, in order to remove the skin. This means that the scar will be extremely reduced. Also, men’s beards and rough skin help to reduce the appearance of scars after this procedure.
Hair transplants: Men have hairlines in a different location from women. Due to the nature of the hairline placement, an additional surgery may be required to make the transplant look natural. This can be anything from what is known as a scalp flap, which brings hair to the balding location, or a flap procedure, which lightly feathers the edge of an area in order to make the transplant more stable.
Liposuction: Men often choose to remove their excess love handle or breast fat, and liposuction is increasing in popularity for this reason. As well, there are some procedures that can “etch” a muscular sculpture onto the abdomen. The end result for a man undergoing liposuction is generally very good – men’s skin elasticity is much better than women’s, so recovery time is faster.
Implants: Men can receive facial implants, and some of the implants that are growing in popularity include calves, triceps, biceps and chest implants. All of these implants leave the area appearing more full and muscular.
Microdermabrasion and chemical peels: The process for dealing with skin that has had a chemical peel or microdermabrasion is different for men than it is for women. For instance, men are unable to shave for 3 weeks after a procedure. And men are restricted from alcohol use for 4 weeks after the procedure, because this can induce redness and irritation of the skin.
Considerations for men
There are many different considerations that men must face before undergoing any cosmetic surgery. These include doctor measurements of the sideburns, hairline and beard, an increased sensitivity and experience with male procedures on the part of the doctor, and other considerations. Men are increasingly heading to the plastic surgeon in greater numbers than ever before, and it is important to do your research before going under the knife yourself.
