When it comes to plastic surgery you are considering making a very important decision. It involves both your health and your personal appearance, with potentially permanent results. You must be able to trust your plastic surgeon, and you may not know him well. For that reason all reputable plastic surgeons will encourage you to ask for referrals. Be sure to seek and receive the referrals and call them. Don’t be embarrassed. The potential surgery you are considering is too serious for embarrassment.
When you get the referral list, first check and see if there is anyone on the list that you know. While it may seem unlikely, you could be surprised. If you are interested in plastic surgery chances are that your friends and acquaintances are interested in it as well. If you know someone on the list, call them first of course. If you don’t know anyone on the list, then pick someone at random. Have a notebook handle to write down information as you receive it and have your questions in mind. When you call, identify yourself as a potential patient of Dr. whoever, and let the person know that they were provided to you as a reference. Ask if they would be willing to speak with you a few moments to discuss the doctor and the procedure. They obviously gave the doctor permission to give out their name as a reference, so they will be willing to talk, but it may not be the best time. Verify that it is and have your discussion or set a later time and call back.
The person you are speaking with will probably be quite willing to tell you about their experience and was probably feeling the same butterflies in the stomach that you have experienced, and probably went through the same process in calling references to gain peace of mind regarding the surgery.
If the referral clients had the same surgery you are considering, ask what preparation they went through, if it was uncomfortable and if so how much, and how long the recovery time was. Possibly the most importantly question to ask is if they are glad they had the procedure and how satisfied are they with the results. You may also want to ask the referral about their experience and interaction with the surgeon as well as the rest of the clinic team.
Asking all of these questions will help you to make up your mind about having the same type of surgery and feel reassured knowing your chosen plastic surgeon is reputable and professional.
