More men than ever before are having plastic surgery in our society, for many different reasons. One of them of course is that we have so many baby boomers getting older. Boomers have experienced many different phases in their lives, many of them having accomplished life long goals and they are now sitting in financially secure zones personally and becoming concerned with the prospects of aging. One of these prospects of course is appearance. They see celebrities having plastic surgery procedures and the stigma that once existed goes away. They check with their doctor and find that they are good candidates and the rest is history.
The procedures men consider vary, and are as different as there are different men. However, face lifts and mini lift are quite popular. Robert Redford is known to have had a face lift and he’s always been a macho type, so no one is going to imply femininity for having had one. Rhinoplasty, also referred to as a nose job is also common and taken advantage of by many who may not be quite as happy with the shape and appearance of their noses as they once were.
Many men are also concerned with their physique, whether or not they appear to be in good shape. Many men opt for the rather elaborate procedure of full body sculpting. Others, not getting the results they wish from hours at the gym seek surgical help in defining abs. And still others consider liposuction because their diet and exercise program just won’t get rid of the love handles they sport on the side.
Good communication between the patient and the plastic surgeon is essential when planning surgery. In the initial consultation the patient will be asked to explain in detail why he wants the procedure being considered and how he hopes to look and feel afterward. It’s important to set aside any awkwardness that might be felt and speak candidly about the changes desired. The patient should feel completely assured of confidentiality.
The doctor will evaluate the patient’s health, conduct a physical exam, take pre-operative photographs, and explain which surgical techniques are most appropriate for the results desire. Discussions will include type of facility, anesthesia, recovery time, cost and risk factors. All in all it will be an informative visit and the patient will be able to make an educated decision about plastic surgery.
