SoftForm (which is sometimes spelled as Soft Form) is a new permanent yet removable facial implant material used for the treatment of deep facial furrows. These can be creases between the nose or the corners of the mouth. Soft Form as the name implies is a soft and natural feeling facial implant gaining in popularity.
The material SoftForm is made from has been used for decades on literally thousands of patients for both heart and abdominal surgery without allergic reaction. The material is placed under the skin and fills in deep, sagging wrinkle lines, and does not react with the body.
SoftForm treatment consists of an in-office cosmetic surgery procedure that is performed under local anesthesia. The implant is inserted by the surgeon below the surface of the patient’s skin through two small incisions. The patient’s body’s own implant holds the SoftForm implant in place. The tube-shaped design of SoftForm implants promotes the growth of the patient’s tissue into the tube and the facial implant remains in place below the surface of the skin, but can be easily removed if the patient desires. All in all, the procedure usually takes about half an hour from start to finish. Generally only local anesthesia is used, combined with a sedative.
All forms of surgery carry some form of uncertainty and risk, but the risk with SoftForm is minimal. Side effects are rare but can include infection of the treatment site or implant or tenderness after implantation requiring removal of the implant. A significant infection may result in damage to or loss of the overlying skin. A hematoma or sermos, a collection of blood or of serum can form which would require surgical drainage.
Possible reactions with any facial implant material may include inflammation, infection, fisula formation, extrusion, hematoma, induration or firmness, formation of seroma, inadequate healing, skin discoloration or inadequate/excessive augmentation. An irregularity of the implant associated with lumping can also occur which may require a surgical procedure to remove or adjust the SoftForm implant.
Results of the treatment are visible immediately. Swelling, bruising and some discomfort may occur. Additionally some patients may experience tightness at the implantation site.
Up to a week after the treatment most swelling and bruising should be gone. In fact many people won’t even be able to tell that a procedure has occurred. The patient will always be able to feel the implant under the skin, but softening of the implant will occur over time.
Four months after the treatment healing will be complete, and the results will be a deep contour correction, with some patents benefiting from additional corrections with cosmetic enhancement materials like Zyderm or Zyplast collagen implants.
