You probably know it as a nose job, but rhinoplasty is one of the most common plastic surgery procedures in North America. In 2005, more than 200,000 men and women has a nose reshaping procedure. It is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose which may include making the nose smaller, reshape the bridge or tip of the nose, reduce the nostil span or straighten a crooked nose.
Let’s Talk About Benefits:
Patients choose rhinoplasty for many reasons. Some people are looking for purely aesthetic changes such as fixing a crooked nose or reducing the size of an overly large nose. Other people look to rhinoplasty to correct birth defects or nose injuries that resulted in permanent abnormalities. Also, rhinoplasty surgery can also greatly improve breathing for people with restricted nasal passages. The procedure itself has been perfected over the years and results can be remarkable when performed by a qualified plastic surgeon.
The Limitations of Rhinoplasty
In most cases, rhinoplasty is limited to what the surgeon has to work with. As such, results are greatly affected by your bone structure, the shape of your face, the thickness and elasticity of your skin as well as your age and general health. Even in the most well known and experienced plastic surgery clinics, it is common (in approximately 10% of patients) that a second surgery is necessary to correct certain deformities or to achieve optimal results.
Procedure 101:
What to Expect: If you are considering a nose job, always choose a reputable plastic surgeon who is experienced in the type of surgery you require (such as reconstructive surgery). Rhinoplasty is performed under local or general anesthetic which depends on the extent of the surgery and the recommendations of the plastic surgeon. Rhinoplasty is one of the oldest forms of plastic surgery and as such, is one of the safest procedures. Risk are those common to all types of surgical procedures.
Recovery: Total time to recover is dependent upon the patient and the extent of the procedure. Expect swelling and bruising in the eye and nose regions. The face will remain sensitive for 2-3 weeks following surgery. In certain patients, mild bruising and moderate swelling can linger for a few months.
Length of Surgery: Rhinoplasty surgery is generally 2-3 hours. For straightforward procedures, it could be a little less.
Cost: Plastic surgery will always vary from one plastic surgery center to the next, and from region to region. On average, expect to pay $3,000 to $5,000 which is dependent upon the extent of the surgery needed and the plastic surgeon chosen. Never choose a plastic surgeon based on cost factors alone – always choose the professional who is most competent in your area of treatment.
